UPDATE: Saturday crash in Harrington claims the life of 1-year-old Md. boy


1/9 UPDATE: Delaware State Police have identified the victim in this crash as 1-year-old Andrew Smith of Denton.


HARRINGTON, Del. – An afternoon crash in Harrington claimed the life of an 1-year-old Maryland boy Saturday.

Delaware State Police say around 2:44 p.m., a Ford Fiesta was traveling southbound in the right lane of South Dupont Highway, south of Raceway Boulevard. At the same time, a Toyota Tacoma was traveling southbound in the left lane near the Ford, police say.

The driver of the Ford tried to move over into the left lane, according to police. However, police say the left rear of her car struck the right front of the Toyota next to her. The Ford driver lost control of her car, and went off the road, according to police. Police say the Ford then hit a tree, flipped, and came to a stop.

A one-year-old boy from Denton, Maryland was safely secured inside the Ford, say police. However, he sustained serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital, where police say he later died. Identification of the victim is pending notification to next of kin.

The driver of the Ford, was identified by police as a 27-year-old Denton, Maryland woman. Police say she was taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Police say the driver of the Toyota and her passenger were unharmed. They were identified as a 49-year-old woman nd 50-year-old woman, both of Milford, Delaware.

Police say no other vehicles were involved in the crash. The roadway was closed for about six hours while the scene was investigated and cleared. Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact Sergeant J. Wheatley at (302) 698-8518.
