Wicomico Humane Society warns against gifting pets this holiday season

SALISBURY, Md- – The Wicomico County Humane Society say of the many great presents to get your friends this holiday season, a furry friend is not one of them.

The Wicomico Humane Society says a forever home for a pet means just that- and that gifting someone the responsibility of owning a pet is not fair to the person or to the pet.
They say the reason their shelter is full is due to people are giving up on pets because they could not handle that responsibility, and while that may be inconvenient for the person giving up the pet for the animal, it means lifelong trust issues, trauma, and a tougher path for them to find the loving home they deserve.

“It is devastating when pets have to come back we see it even for foster homes they come back they are so sad they think they had a home they come back they act out to start destructive behaviors they got overwhelmed they regress quite sadly so we don’t want them back we want them in best homes they can be in,” said Event Coordinator Whitney Hoffman.

Hoffman tells 47ABC, a forever home and a forever fit means an owner who understands the life-long commitment they are signing up for and are willing to be patient and kind as animals get the training they need to become the perfect companion.
