Lyft credits available for all in Maryland on holiday weekends
MARYLAND – If you’re partying in Maryland this holiday season and are looking for a safe way to get home, look no further than your smart phone. A grant from the Governors Highway Safety Association is allowing the state to give Lyft users ride share credits on weekends.
The process is easy: anyone using a Lyft app in the state will get $10 towards one ride home. Next weekend, they can do the same.
“They’ll just need to be able to pull up their Lyft app. In the payment section they’ll add their Lyft pass. This weekend will be a $10 ride credit. We did up it from previous weekends because we expect there to be a little bit higher demand,” said MDOT MVA Highway Safety Office director Tim Kerns.
Ride share credit codes will change every weekend. Kerns says MDOT MVA is working to make sure as many Marylanders as possible can take advantage of the program.
“While we have been keeping track of how many have been used over the past couple of weekends, we still have plenty of ride share credits left for the next two holiday weekends to make sure that people get home safely,” said Kerns.
This is the second year that the state of Maryland has launched the program in an effort to curb drunk driving. Kerns says in 2022, Maryland has seen 170 people killed in DUI-related crashes; more than 750 drunk driving arrests have been made just in December.
“The majority of those have happened on weekends, which is when our program is available. So, we really do encourage folks to make the right choice, and make a safe choice to get home safely. We want everybody to be able to enjoy the holidays with their loved ones,” said Kerns. “We don’t want anybody to have their holidays ruined because somebody made a poor decision.”
