Kent Island falls in Maryland 2A football championship

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Kent Island Buccannears came up just short in the 2A state championship game, 25-16, against top-seeded Milford Mill Friday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

Kent Island led 10-7 at halftime thanks to two turnovers forced by the defense, and quarterback Tommy McAndrews’ touchdown pass to Kasey Heath late in the second quarter.

The Millers’ strong defensive line forced the Bucs to adjust their offensive game plan. Instead of leaning on their impressive rushing attack, McAndrews would lead the way through the air.

The Millers came out on fire in the second half, scoring a touchdown to take the lead in the opening drive and following it up with another score to go up 19-10 after the end of the third quarter.

An interception returned for a touchdown by Milford Mill put the Bucs behind 15 points with five minutes left in the game. A late McAndrews’ passing touchdown to Tucker Claxton on fourth and goal cut the deficit to nine. A missed extra point following the score ended any hopes of a Kent Island comeback.

Kasey Heath, the senior leader, goes out at the top of the Bayside after scoring 40 touchdowns this season and running for over 2,500 yards.

The Kent Island Buccaneers finish the year 12-2, including a 12-game winning streak, and was a finalist for the state football championship for the first time in program history.
