Cell tower to be installed in Berlin bringing better service to residents

BERLIN, Md. – A new tower coming to west Ocean City is set to transform cell service in the area.

Specifically the area of South Point and Assateague Federal and State parks. The cell tower is in the process of being built to give residents and visitors better cellular reception. It will be 144 feet high, located in the woods behind the Assateague Crab House on Stephan Decatur Highway.

For a long time, cell service has been poor in the area according to the south point association director. Here’s why: “There’s an issue when you have too many people using a cell tower at one time it reverts it to another tower because it can’t take the load of people and on Assateague itself, there’s over 2 million visitors a year,” says Michael LeCompte, the President of the South Point Association.

The president also adds “There’s been a huge problem with people losing their signal south of Frontier Town and when they go to use it whether it is an emergency or its a problem with checking on a bill or to check on your neighbor, they can’t get through,” says LeCompte.

The cell tower will provide service for the 4 major carriers. The director says boaters will also be happy because on the water they will have a better connection in case of emergencies.

The president has big hopes that this will benefit more than just the residents. “We were able to get this nice cell tower on this farm which is directly north of South Point. We’re hoping this will alleviate all the problems with communication down here,” says LeCompte.

The cell tower is in the beginning stages of being completed. “After many complaints from the citizens here and the visitors of Assateague Island and the park service they finally listened to us, and with the help of county government in Worcester County, we were able to get this nice cell tower installed,” says LeCompte.
