Brandywine Valley SPCA hosts MegaAdoption event to help 1,300 animals find new homes

HARRINGTON, Del.- Rescuing Pets- and helping them find new homes; was the mission of Brandywine Valley SPCA’s MegaAdoption event Sunday at the Delaware State Fairgrounds.

The event saw over 1,300 adoptable dogs and cats, of all stripes, waiting patiently to find the loving homes they deserve.

“We started out with over 1,300 animals looking for homes cats and dogs yesterday we adopted out 601 today we are over a thousand and we hope to send everyone home,’ said BV SPCA Marketing Director Linda Torelli.

Torelli tells 47ABC the event couldn’t happen without the 500 volunteers and 200 staff members who worked behind the scenes to help as many animals as possible despite record-high costs.

“The cost of running this event is significantly higher this time around the food and the supplies it is so much more than usual and we are not charging more to adopt so we hope people who aren’t adopting can donate to help us support the program,” she said.

Some volunteers have been with the animals since they arrived from Texas and Alabama, and the most recent flight brought animals from Louisiana.
Volunteers say seeing animals go from those conditions to them leaving with a family makes the journey worth it.

“Some of these states are high kill states and this is what it’s all about they get their lives saved it’s why we do it,” said Volunteer John Gregory.

Torelli says she could measure the progress of the event, as more and more crates once filled with dogs and cats began to open up and be folded away as pets made their way to new homes.

“When we get to the end of the day you can physically see on the floor all the empty crates all of those family matches its awesome to see the empty cages and empty shelters’ Torelli said.
