Worcester County ballot measure on sports complex remains too close to call

BERLIN, Md. – One ballot measure in Maryland is coming down to the wire, on if a new sports complex should come to Worcester county.

Question A on the Worcester County Ballot is still too close to call as of Wednesday evening, despite the NO choice leading by just over one thousand votes.

The ballot measure was added to the ballot following efforts from People for Fiscal Responsibility, who were able to gather over 4,000 signatures against the center, citing concerns about the project’s financing, location, and economic impacts.

They are against the current proposed location in Berlin citing issues with the location the cost of the land and its proximity to Stephen Decatur High School.
The group’s founder Vincent Gisriel Jr says the results are validating issues they believe the proposal has.

“We feel the voters have had a chance to speak and they have indicated their concern on the concept that it is using public funds to build it and subsidize it and that the location was not the proper one for such a facility,” Gisriel said.

Advocates of the plan including four of seven Worcester County Commissioners say the sports complex would bring increased travel to the area, and boost tax revenue- while being financed through the state, not local dollars.
