Sussex County sees decreased voter turnout compared to 2020,2018 elections
LAUREL, Del.- Voters across Sussex county are turning out to the polls tonight, and combined with early voting, election officials say it is a respectable turnout figure.
Sussex County Elections Department Director Bo McDowell tells 47abc at last count, the county was at 45 percent voter turnout and was trending towards finishing at 50 percent by the time the final tally is made.
The last count showed 89,000 votes cast as of 12:30 am Wednesday according to McDowell showing a lower turnout than in the 2018 midterms which were 56 percent voter participation at 96,000 votes cast.
He tells despite those figures the election still outperformed 2014 turnout figures which were less than 35 percent.
“It spiked pretty quickly when folks got off work as it usually does so if we keep that pace we will hopefully end near 50 percent that is a pretty good turnout,” McDowell said.
Official certification of the election by the Board of Canvas Board of Canvass in Superior Court is for November 10th.
