14th Annual Turkey Trek at Pemberton Park

SALISBURY, Md. – On this Thanksgiving Day before filling plates with food some families filled their shoes and went for a run.

Runners took to the trails of Pemberton Park and on this Thanksgiving Day they’re most excited to be running with their families, for the 14th Annual Turkey Trek.

“I feel like its a great way to celebrate thanksgiving, I feel like the running community is like a family in some ways, so it’s nice to get together with our running families, so it’s nice together before we spend time with our families at home and have our thanksgiving feasts,” says Vanessa Junkin, the Marketing and Public Relations Manager with the Wicomico County Recreation, Parks, Tourism & Civic Center.

Geno Lowe, a local running coach also participating, this time for the 3rd year says this is the best one he’s seen so far. “This is my third time doing the turkey trek but this is honestly the best weather I’ve had for it so far, it’s not very windy as you can tell and just a great morning, says runner Geno Lowe.

To make this turkey trek happen, it was all hands on deck to make it new and different for its 14th anniversary. “A lot of setting up on the day of, then we have volunteers out here helping check people in, I roped my family into doing that this year,” says Lillie Olson the Race Director.

Even after runners cross the finish line participants still have some festive competitions to participate in before sitting down for that long-awaited meal. “There’s also a thanksgiving costume contest so whoever has the best costume is going to be able to win a prize as well – it’s a crown with some turkey feathers 1.09 and some inflatable turkey legs so it’s a lot of fun,” says Junkin.
