Shepherd’s Office in Georgetown ramp up donation efforts for food and clothing for homeless ahead of colder weather

GEORGETOWN, DE-   The Shepherd’s office in Georgetown is ramping up its clothing donations and giveaways for items like socks, warm shirts, and winter jackets to make sure those they served are as protected as they can be in advance of colder weather.
They say donations are critical now for food, clothing, and butane for buddy heaters which they say have become a staple for survival for homeless living in Georgetown’s tent city.

Director Jim Martin says the center has also been expanding its food programming, to meet the needs of more families who become food insecure.

“We are actually giving out food boxes now for families that have places to live without enough so whoever requests it so we always need help with food, so we always need donations as we are all volunteers,” Martin said.

Martin says demand for butane heaters has gone up, as they offer protections against accidental fires or injury, and can be used inside a tent. He tells us as inflation has made them and the butane they run on more expensive they have added them to the list of donations they collect.

He tells us the food and clothing donations are now running 6 days a week Monday through Saturday, and that those looking to donate clothing items, butane tanks for buddy heaters, or volunteers can register online at the Shepherd’s Office website and Facebook page.
