“In Loving Memory of Hope and Nathan Toy Drive” in Seaford turns family tragedy into event bringing joy for families in need
SEAFORD, Del.- Kimberly Glasgow’s whole life changed last January when she and her two kids- six-year-old Nathan and 14-year-old Hope, were hit in a head-on collision, claiming the lives of both children. Now she and her husband are honoring their memory, collecting toys for those less fortunate to have this holiday season. They are partnering with Love Inc. and Toys for tots, with multiple drop-off bins across Delmarva, as well as an amazon wishlist that has seen over 40 presents shipped to their home. They say it’s the kind of event their children would have wanted.
“They were always the kids that wanted to fill the toys for tots boxes, they were the kids that wanted to put money in the kettles every Christmas, they were givers and now they still are,” Glasgow said, adding “Going through each item that comes in is bittersweet. There are toys coming in and I would go, ‘Hope would have just lost it for this, Nathan would have loved this,’ so it’s bittersweet, because we aren’t buying toys for them anymore.”
She says as the presents pile up, waiting to be distributed after the December 2nd deadline, she says she’ll never forget the feeling of that first donation.
“I cannot describe that feeling, it was one of the few moments of real happiness I’ve had,” she said.
She says each present often comes with a note, which she now keeps in a stack on a shelf adorned with pictures of Nathan and Hope. In the center sit their ashes, looking over her as she coordinates the logistics of picking up and delivering the presents at her kitchen counter.
“I don’t drive anymore, but luckily we thought, we don’t have to do it alone. We can partner with these amazing groups who have the distribution, and then we can help those families,” she said.
She says her kids were here entire world, and through drives like this, she gets to feel closer to them.
“We were very close-knit, they were my life and by doing things like this toy drive, they still are,” Glasgow said.
