City of Salisbury to upgrade ID equipment to keep children safer

SALISBURY, Md. – The City of Salisbury is upgrading some of its equipment that helps to keep children safe.

Important Information

Monday night, Salisbury City Council approved the purchase of an EZ Child ID ‐ Complete EZ Turnkey System.

“It is a system that enables parents and our police department to work in collaboration together, to ensure that digital information and digitized information, such as fingerprints, voice recording, video, picture, can be stored not only on a card, but also be stored by our police department,” said Mayor Jake Day.

Mayor Day says that information would be used in the event that a child goes missing.

“It just makes us better equipped to be prepared for one of those nightmare scenarios that we hope never happens to any family,” said Mayor Day. “If a child were to go missing, that quick determination could be made, identification could be made, of who that kid is. Then the search, hopefully, would provide more tools to make sure that that child gets reunited with their family quickly.”

Upgrading Equipment

The $5,728 purchase of the machine is made possible by a grant from the Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention. Mayor Day says the last time the equipment was upgraded was in 2018.

“It’s really just a matter of outdated technology, and replacing that technology. We received a grant from the State of Maryland to purchase a better piece of equipment than we had,” said Mayor Day.

Getting Involved

Families will be able to find the new equipment at community events and the Salisbury Police Department, says Mayor Day. He encourages all parents and guardians to consider entering their kids into the system.

“Traditionally, not only do we offer this as an opportunity for parents to come by the police station. But, on top of that, we usually have this piece of equipment out at community events like National Night Out,” said Mayor Day. “Be on the lookout for those sorts of events, neighborhood events, and potentially our monthly neighborhood walks, community events. Please stop by the Salisbury Police Department as well, right on Route 50.”
