Multiple correctional officers injured in assault at ECI

WESTOVER, Md. – 47 ABC has learned that five correctional officers suffered non-life threatening injuries when they were assaulted by inmates in a housing unit at Eastern Correctional Institution Wednesday evening.

We’re told four officers were taken to a local hospital, while the fifth officer’s injuries were less serious. All of the officers who went to the hospital were treated and released.

DPSCS detectives and intelligence officers are on scene, and the Department says it plans to aggressively seek criminal charges against the perpetrators. The investigation is ongoing. Staffing was not an issue, as the compound where the incident occurred was fully staffed Wednesday night.

The facility is secure, and there was never a threat to the public.
