Delaware Senate District 6 Candidate Spotlight: Steve Smyk

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- Current Delaware House of Representatives Member Steve Smyk is the republican nominee for Delaware’s 6th Senate District seat, covering Rehoboth, Lewes, and Dewey Beach. Smyk says he is committed to increasing constituent services and preserving the district for those native to the area. He tells us he is most proud of his work on the Open Spaces Beautification committee and farmland protections.
Smyk says his goal for the district is to balance population growth without displacing those who have lived in the area for generations while keeping taxes low.
“It’s a major concern when you talk about population growth when you are taking in people, urban people, with more money compared to those here traditionally, what you get is higher taxes because they expect more services, they need more services, and they want beautification, that raises taxes and displaces people who have been here for generations,” Smyk said.
He tells us his background as a law enforcement officer and also informs his decisions in Dover and hopes to bring that to the 6th Senate District.
“We are working very hard against certain bills coming from Wilmington that make Delaware more welcoming to criminal behavior that I will not stand for,” Smyk said.
He tells us he also wants to support infrastructure investment but believes that should be done on a local level, not from Dover.
“Land use is a county issue, it’s an important issue for us but its not a state issue, you don’t want New Castle County being able to tell Sussex how to build, it needs to stay local,” Smyk said.
Smyk faces off this November against Democrat Russ Huxtable and Non-Partisan Wendy Jones.
