Back to School Boxing event brings boxing thrills to Salisbury, and a chance to go pro for Parkside Student

SALISBURY, Md. – Fighters, coaches, and boxing fans from across the east coast made their way to Salisbury on Saturday for the Back to School Boxing Explosion hosted by the Hard Hustle Boxing Clinic.

“We are giving our boxers the opportunity here on our platform and show the best of boxing for everyone to say ‘that was awesome,'” said Event Organizer Ralph Nichols.

Boxers ducked, hooked, and jabbed over the course of 15 matches, looking for a chance to build a record and go pro, while their coaches cheered from the sidelines.

“The people here they can see the discipline and dedication to get there and the courage it takes to get in the ring,” said Coach Warren Boardley, of Mac Lewis Boxing gym in Baltimore.

The first match of the night featured Parkside high school’s Nasir Brooks against Anthony Moore of Baltimore, coached by Boardley.

Brooks tells 47 ABC it’s his dream to become a fighter and the event was his first outing after months of training.

“It’s like a dream come true because I’m trying to become a professional boxer this is a dream come true for me,” Brooks said.

The event was a sanctioned event of the South Atlantic Boxing Association, and a record of successful fights is a prerequisite for any boxer looking to go pro.

But in that hard-fought round, it was Moore who came up with the win.

“It felt real good, all that hard work and dedication and just staying motivated,” Moore said following the match.

It was a sentiment echoed by his coach.

“It’s very rewarding to see the things you poured into a kid come forth and manifest itself I can’t explain it it’s just that kind of feeling,” Broadley said.

Nichol tells 47 ABC that it’s that mix of discipline, display of skill, and dedication that he hopes will be put on display in Salisbury more often. He tells 47 ABC that the athletes are giving it their all, and now it’s on the community to show up in huge numbers, and show their support.

“We are offering these shows to the community they just got to embrace what we are trying to do,” Nichols said.

The next boxing event hosted by Nichols and the Hard Hustle Boxing Clinic is set for October 29th.
