Smith Island Waterman’s Float event hides glass orbs for visitors to find, post about, and keep

SMITH ISLAND, Md- A new event on Smith Island is drawing travelers from across the world and social media buzz online.

The Smith Island Waterman’s Float sees 30 pieces of handcrafted glass orbs hidden throughout the island near bike trails and roads.

Visitors are encouraged to keep their eyes peeled for 2 new orbs that are hidden every week, post their discoveries and take them home as a keepsake of their time on the barrier island.

The event’s organizer Shelly Somers tells 47abc they even had an Airbnb renter from Italy find one and bring it back home with them after their visit.

“I thought what a way to show off our beautiful island and have something interesting to do as your walking bike riding or riding along in a golf cart,” Somers said.

She says 2 of the 30 glass pieces were made locally in Berlin, and that the final two will be hidden in the coming week. She tells us the event was a great success and hopes to continue it next year.
