Storm damage across Delmarva after severe storm, 80+ mph winds in Harrington
DELMARVA- According to Delmarva Power, 25,000 of the more than 32,000 customers who lost power have had their services restored after severe storms swept through Delmarva.
In Salisbury, Halo Bargain Store had to delay opening, after a damaged transformer took out their AC unit, sending smoke through their building. Workers Wednesday aired out the store with fans, hoping to get rid of any fumes.
“The smoke was pouring out of the walls so just to be safe we did shut down,” said Administrator Logan Schevel.
But the worst of the storm hit near Harrington Delaware, where multiple trees were uprooted, trailers were overturned, and the roof of a chicken house was torn off and thrown into a neighboring home.
“My neighbor, his roof was just projectiled into my house,” said Harrington resident James Morehouse.
The weather event that caused it is known as a microburst, a strong gust of wind that comes out of the storm and slams the grand with winds over 80 miles per hour.
“I looked across the field and I saw it coming just a white wall of water,” Harrington said. He says he’s lucky he and his wife headed the severe weather alert and got their family inside the home.
“When we got the alert we had 3 kids in the pool out back so if we had ignored it they would have been in there when this storm and lightning came through,” he said adding “if we didn’t act on it may be some of the kids are in the hospital or worse.”
