John Cannon Seeks Re-Election for Wicomico County Council
SALISBURY, Md- Wicomico County President John Cannon is seeking re-election for his term on the council. With Maryland’s Early Primary Election voting opened up today and the official voting day is July 19th, Cannon is pointing to his achievements on the board.
Cannon says he is drawing on his experience on the county council for 12 of the last sixteen years and president for nine years. He says he is proud of his involvement with the Greater Salisbury Committee, chamber of commerce, and other business groups.
He says a top issue for him is maintaining and expanding the Salisbury airport which he says is a crucial part of the economy.
“I don’t know that everyone recognized the gem the airport is to the county if businesses wanted to fly they would have to drive to Baltimore or Washington, and so we want to continue improvements to the airport from the new water line, to the expanded runway to the industrial and drone park,” Cannon said.
He says other achievements he has worked with the council on include water and sewer plans and moving forward with broadband access for undeserved areas in the county. He says these are achievements they have been able to make without increasing the tax rate or downgrading the county’s bond credit rating.
“Wicomico county happens to have an excellent bond rating because of our fiscal restraint our management of the funds and the reserves we have in our county so that is a real plus,” he said.
He says that growth has also increased under his stewardship of the County Council, and by maintaining the town’s revenue cap, they were able to grow the base of the town while at the same time decreasing property taxes.
