Wear Orange Anti-Gun Violence Groups hold events across Maryland highlighting resources and raising awarness
SNOW HILL, Md- To commemorate national gun violence awareness week Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and Wear Orange anti-gun violence groups are holding events across Delmarva to help raise awareness of resources and help to prevent deaths and injuries with guns.
Nicole Hollywood is Deputy Chapter Lead of Maryland Moms Demand Action and says Wear Orange originated on June 2, 2015, with teenagers in Chicago, who wanted to honor their friend, Hadiya, after she was shot and killed on what would have her 18th birthday.
She says this week today, Wear Orange honors Hadiya and the more than 110 people shot and killed every day in the United States, as well as the hundreds more who are wounded.
She tells us this year’s theme is for lawmakers both Democrats and Republicans in the senate as #DONTLOOKAWAY. She says that what lawmakers do when they fail to pass background checks, red flag laws, and other broadly support gun control measures.
She says, despite that national inaction there are resources available locally. In Snow, hill Wear Orange distributed gun locks to prevent children from getting into guns, and resources of local gun stores that offered voluntary surrender options.
Hollywood tells us that increased gun safety isn’t about disarming people, but rather making sure guns are owned and operated responsibly.
