DelDOT recommends vehicle tune ups as summer temperatures arrive

DELMARVA – DelDOT is reminding drivers to get their annual tune up as summer temperatures heat up.

“We had our first taste of real summer weather just this past weekend. For some folks, they may have gotten an unexpected surprise with car issues,” said DelDOT Director of Community Relations C.R. McLeod. “With the summer season upon us, and looking forward to a lot of that heat coming our way, it’s definitely time to be mindful of the condition of your car.”

McLeod says that includes getting an oil change, topping off fluids, and changing your wiper blades. He also recommends checking light bulbs, making sure your tires are properly inflated, and checking out the belts. Plus, avoiding idling can help you on fuel efficiency.

“The core message is safety and efficiency, especially this year with really, really high gas prices,” said McLeod. “Be mindful of ways that you can save gas when you’re going to be driving around, whether it’s in Eastern Sussex County or any point that you may be traveling to.”

Making sure your car is up to snuff this summer isn’t just about saving money, according to McLeod. He says it can also help keep the roads safer by avoiding breakdowns as traffic increases with summer travel.

“There’s a pent up demand for travel, and we expect that there will be a lot of travel, not just on Memorial Day weekend, but throughout the summer months. Making sure your car is safe and in operating condition is key,” said McLeod.
