Salisbury student to be the Student Member of the Maryland State Board of Education

SALISBURY, Md.  – Local student Merin Thomas has officially been recognized as the Student Member of the Board, for the state of Maryland.

Thomas says that she’s very happy to be representing Wicomico County as a junior at James M. Bennett High School for the 2022-2023 school year. This opportunity will allow her to advocate for nearly 900,000 students in Maryland. This comes after being nominated by Governor Larry Hogan.

Thomas says this was no easy process but, with big shoes to fill, Thomas already has ideas on what she plans to do in office.

“I hope to accomplish to get each minority voice in the district heard and get those voices amplified to hopefully become a person people can depend on in Maryland and someone people can look up to,” Thomas tells 47ABC.

She says she is proud to have an opportunity like this. Through the process, she was able to learn her strength and weaknesses. She also says that her support system has contributed to her nomination and the woman she is today.

“I am very thankful for the support system, I’ve made throughout this process to the teachers who’ve written me recommendation letters,” Thomas adds.

Thomas will be recognized for this honor on April 12th at the Wicomico County Board meeting.
