March marks Problem Gambling Awareness Month, help is available

DELAWARE – For many, the month of March means filling out March Madness brackets and hoping for a big win. But, the month also marks Problem Gambling Awareness Month. The Delaware Council on Gambling Problems (DCGP) says March Madness is even bigger than the Super Bowl in terms of sports betting.

Executive Director of DCGP Arlene Simon says that can be a major trigger for those already struggling with a gambling addiction. “March Madness is on the TV, in the newspapers, and press 24 hours a day once the schedule is put up. If you have somebody that has a gambling problem, the temptation is there constantly,” she said.

Simon tells 47ABC that problem gambling can impact anyone, no matter their age. “Youth, starting in their junior year of high school, are gambling. Now, with gaming being very prevalent, we have a very big program where we go into the schools five days a week, handling these things with the kids,” she said.

There are a few signs you can look out for in your loved ones who might be having a hard time. That includes preoccupation with events or gambling, ignoring loved ones, missing time at work, and constantly looking for results and information. Simon says you can also watch for anxiety, mood swings, and forgetfulness around important family events. Those struggling with gambling addiction may also show the desire to constantly raise the stakes, and continually playing after losses, thinking they’ll win next time.

But Simon says there is a way to beat this addiction. “Problem gambling is a treatable disorder, and there is help available for them in many different ways. It’s not a bottomless pit, and they don’t have to despair,” she said.

If you or your loved ones are struggling with problem gambling, there are places to turn. Simon says you can call DCPG’s 24/7 live help line. The help line can be reached at 1 (888) 850-8888. You can also find resources by clicking here.
