UPDATE: 21-year-old man dead after Dewey Beach officer-involved shooting, DSP investigating

3/21 UPDATE: Delaware State Police have released the name of the victim in Saturday’s officer-involved shooting.

The victim has been identified as 21-year-old Rodney Robinson II of Milford.

The investigation is continuing.


DEWEY BEACH, Del. – Delaware State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that took the life of a 21-year-old Milford man early Saturday morning.

Around 1:17 a.m. employees at the Starboard Restaurant called Dewey Beach Police for a man exiting the bar with a gun. Police tried to speak with the man on the sidewalk, but he ran away, southbound on Coastal Highway. Officers chased the man for about three blocks but lost sight of him.

Then, around 2:23 a.m. Dewey Beach Police received another call from the Starboard Restaurant. Employees said the man had returned to the business and was in an employee-only area. Two Dewey Beach Police officers responded, and found the man in the outdoor tent area of the restaurant.

Officers tried to make contact with the man again, but he ran northbound on Coastal Highway, before turning onto Saulsbury Street, and into a nearby alleyway. Police say a 1.5-year veteran of Dewey Beach Police shot the man in the upper torso. Police say the man kept running and was later found unconscious on the 2100 block of Coastal Highway. Police also found a handgun on the scene.

Police say they began immediately began performing life-saving measures and called for EMS. The man was taken to Beebe Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The Division of Forensic Science will be conducting an autopsy on the man.

Meanwhile, the Dewey Beach Police officers involved in the incident were not hurt. The officer who shot the man is now on standard administrative leave with pay and benefits, pending the outcome of the investigation.

Additional information regarding the victim will be provided once proper notification has been made to his family.

During a press conference, Sgt. Clifford Dempsey, PIO for the Dewey Police Department says “Our department had several officers who were affected by this incident, and being a smaller department an investigation like this can be very overwhelming.” Sgt. Dempsey adds, “The Dewey Beach Police Department would like to offer its most sincere condolences to all those who had love ones directly affected by this event.”
