Washington High School Teacher raises 150 sweatshirts for students

PRINCESS ANNE, Md- A local school teacher, and organiz

ations are coming together to keep kids warm and engaged at school. Washington Academy and High School Teacher Dr. Stephanie Duer launched a project this month to help purchase sweatshirts for students.

She says many students and their families were impacted by Covid-19 disruptions and were unable to afford some uniform items, or find them in stores due to supply chain shortages.

She started a fundraiser on DonorsChoose.org, with donations coming in from the Manokin Lodge #106 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons,  DonorsChoose.org‘s Black History Month Partnership offered a 100 percent match for any money donated.

The project was completed Wednesday with over 2 thousand dollars and over 150 sweatshirts purchased. Dr. Duer says making sure kids are comfortable and warm is key to giving them a good education.

“I noticed a lot of students were able to get polos and pants for school but sweatshirts were things kids needed as it got colder. I figured it would be a way to help out the community and help our families,” Dr. Duer said adding “If your physical needs aren’t met and you are cold or hungry, it is hard to focus on schoolwork.”

She tells us this is just one of many projects she has been able to launch in the district and with the new connections forged through these fundraisers she hopes to do more down the road.
