Georgetown teen charged with possession of handgun without serial number
GEORGETOWN, Del. – Delaware State Police arrested a 17-year-old Georgetown male after finding a handgun with a removed serial number during a traffic stop Saturday morning.
According to Delaware State Police, a trooper on Route 113 near Wilson road spotted a red Toyota Yaris traveling with an expired registration. The trooper pulled over the car and observed a 21-year-old operator and 17-year-old front-seat passenger in the car along with a strong odor of alcoholic beverages and observed signs of impairment on the operator, prompting the trooper to begin a DUI investigation.
During the course of the investigation, the front seat passenger was observed discarding marijuana outside of the vehicle. The trooper recovered approximately 4.82 grams of marijuana and took the juvenile front seat passenger into custody. While placing the juvenile under arrest the trooper discovered he was in possession of a loaded handgun with an obliterated serial number.
Both suspects were taken into custody and transported to Troop 4 where the 17-year-old male was charged with Felony Possession of A Firearm by a Prohibited Juvenile, Felony Concealed Carrying of a Deadly Weapon, Felony possession of a Weapon with an Obliterated Serial Number, and marijuana possession. He was committed to the Stevenson House on a $30,100 secured bond.
The 21-year-old driver of the vehicle was charged with DUI among other traffic violations.
