BHM: Healthcare trailblazers pave the way for health in Cambridge
DELMARVA – Dorchester County medical professionals are honoring individuals who paved the way.
CEO and President of Choptank Community Health System, Sara Rich says Dr. Fasset and Nurse Magee set the standard for healthcare in the area.
Nurse Magee was one of the first African American nurses in the country. Magee traveled across the country serving in many different capacities. While Dr. Fassett took care of different patients through his private practice, in Dorchester County. He also made home visits and provided care where needed.
“Were honoring their legacy and providing access to care in the communities that we serve, having medical professionals available and easily accessible is more important now than ever and to continue to provide services for everybody is a great way that we can honor both Dr. Fassett and Nurse Magee,” the President says.
Rich tells 47ABC in 1998 the Choptank community merged with the Fassett Magee health center in downtown Cambridge. It was then that officials realized it was time to change the name, to Choptank. Which is based on the river that runs through the service area.
