BHM: Food that brings the community together

DELMARVA – Take Your Pick in Salisbury is a restaurant where you can get soul food.

In the Black community, food plays a big role. Chef Shy tells 47 ABC more about the cuisine.

“Food that makes your stomach smile. It puts a smile on your face, your stomach is smiling. You’re just like oh my god this is so good,” Chef Shy explains.

It is that exact feeling you get when you eat at Take Your Pick. Chef Shy owner of the restaurant says it is soul food that brings people together. She says the cuisine brings people from all different walks of life into her restaurant, bringing people of all different nationalities and ethnic groups.

“It’s like all your cares are to the side because you’re with your family and you’re eating good,” she adds.

At her restaurant soul food days are Thursdays and Sundays, which she tells 47 ABC are some of her busiest days. Chef Shy says some popular dishes are turkey wings, mac and cheese, greens, and yams. And you can’t forget community favorites including smothered pork chops and pig feet.

Chef Shy also says there is a right and wrong way to make these tasty dishes. She tells us these comfort dishes are not something you just throw together.

“You take your time and cook it, usually you sit around the table with your family and you’re laughing and you’re putting all your hard days of work on the table,” she concludes.

And even in the midst of a pandemic, Chef Shy says she was not hit with the effects of the pandemic. She says when her restaurant opens at 10:30 AM the people come in and business picks up.

Chef Shy tells 47 ABC her soul food gives you that homey feeling.  Take Your Pick doesn’t only sell soul food, you can also get Caribbean-style food and seafood. Take a look at her website, where you can also learn more about catering.
