BHM: Did you know there’s a statue of Harriet Tubman on Salisbury University’s campus?

DELMARVA – Right here on Salisbury University’s campus there is a Harriet Tubman statue.

Happy Black History month! Here’s a bit of trivia for you:

Harriet Tubman born Araminta Ross was one of the historical figures who helped people escape slavery. The statue can be found in front of Conway Hall. Alex Green, owner of Harriet Tubman Tours tells us that Tubman is known for her unselfish acts, beyond the normal, and for taking great risks. If you visit the statue you will see a few furry friends that hold special meaning in Tubman’s history.

“The actual rabbit by her feet, well we know a rabbit to be very swift-moving around, jumping all around and very quick – that resembles the swiftness of her movements in and out of slavery,” Green says.

The owner also explains that the owl on her shoulder represents the keen sight you need to see at night. That same sight Tubman used taking trips along the Underground Railroad at night to remain unseen.

Green explains the uniqueness of Harriet Tubman’s story. He says her story has been told and retold so many times, but we need to look at the inner parts of her story. Which would allow for the examination of how African Americans survived the institution of slavery.

“Her life you can connect with the past and then you can put them in the future and look and say hey she did it back then in an institution that was meant to break down ones character and she went on to be successful,” Green adds.

This year marks 200 years of Tubman’s birth, she was born in 1822. Green concludes we should take something from Harriet Tubman’s life and apply it to the principles of today’s society.

You can learn more by visiting Green’s website. Harriet Tubman Tours is a full-service tour agency that shares the life and legacy of Harriet Tubman.
