DEMA urges Delawareans to prepare for winter storm
DELAWARE — 47ABC spoke with Jeff Sands with the Delaware Emergency Management Agency to get more information to prepare for the snowstorm.
Sands says to start with the basics and create a plan with your family in case there is an emergency. He says you need a plan to stay in the house but also if you have to leave. That includes making sure you have water in case your pipes freeze, that’s about 1 gallon per person. He adds, don’t forget about your pets. Sands says, oftentimes we see people running to the stores for bread and milk but don’t forget about non-perishables in case you lose power.
“Depending on the severity of the storm there may be some travel restrictions – it’s a possibility so make sure you have the supplies you need, don’t count on running out to the store at the last minute,” he says.
Sands says with this storm there is a prediction of high winds so make sure you have an emergency kit in your car and in your home, along with a few other things to keep in mind:
- make sure your generator, snow blower, and other electronics work
- check your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors
- make sure your supplies are easily accessible
- make sure you have enough supply of your medication and medical devices charged
Also, Sands shares that DEMA has an Emergency Notification System. To sign up for those emergency alerts visit their website.
