Choptank Fiber Celebrates High Speed Service in Somerset County

WORCESTER COUNTY, Md- Choptank Electric CoOp held a Ribbon Cutting Celebration on Thursday, January 6, 2022,  celebrating the success of the 90-member Demo Project and their plan to open highspeed broadband internet service to another 65 members in Somerset County.

They say it can be a huge boost to services that have become a cornerstone of the pandemic including online learning and remote work. They say they have been able to increase internet download speeds to over 100 megabytes per second for most customers, as well as offering up to download 2.5 megabits per second service thanks to fiberoptic wires.

“It is future proof if we’ll get faster over time depending on what equipment you put on the ends of the fiber,” said Vice President of Government Affairs Valerie Connelly adding that they hope the high speeds can entice remote workers and encourage high bandwidth users to come to the area.

“Our system accommodates 2.5 megabit so we are offering it for anyone who may need it or think they want it,but certainly we don’t anticipate all customers requiring that level of speed” she said.

She tells us as part of their 2022 plan, Somerset County is pulling on ARPA funds that will help Choptank fiber expand to over 1,400 underserved households in the area.
