Humane Society of Wicomico Co. issuing warning about hiring scam through Indeed

SALISBURY, Md. – The Humane Society of Wicomico County is asking people to be wary of fake job listings.

“It looks like it’s coming from Nigeria. There’s another link from California. So, we’re not exactly sure,” said HSWC event and community relations coordinator Megan Koester.

Koester says there are currently listings on Indeed saying HSWC is hiring a data analyst. However, Koester says they’re not actually hiring at the moment. Plus, Koester says previous applicants are getting emails from Indeed saying they’re moving forward with the hiring process. With that fake promise, comes paperwork asking for personal information, including social security and driver’s license numbers.

A couple of people have fallen victim already, according to Koester. So, she says they’re trying to stop this scam in its tracks. “There’s lots of misspellings. Our phone number is wrong,” she said. “Pay attention to any errors. Double check our phone number, double check our address, double check the fonts. The fonts are kind of changing throughout the paragraph. Always be alert.”

The HSWC is asking anyone who might get this phony paperwork to give them a call first, before doing anything with it. Koester adds that any request for updated billing information when applying for a job is a red flag. “We don’t want anyone else to be a victim of this scam,” she said.
