The Bright Side: Spreading awareness about MS
LEWES, Del. – Lewes native Devin Garlit has been living with multiple sclerosis for over a decade now – a degenerative disease that impacts his life every single day.
“On a daily basis with MS, I get a lot of burning nerve pain, particularly in my legs and shoulders, and in my arms. I get a lot of numbness and weakness in my legs that often causes me to fall and stumble and sometimes I need to use a cane,” said Devin.
While his symptoms forced him out of work a few years ago, one thing he is still able to do is type, and he’s using that ability to help others.
“I started writing about MS and submitting stories to a website for people with MS, and I started writing stories because I thought if people could read about my life, my family and friends could read about my life, I felt if it was on the internet maybe they could understand it a little bit better”
What started out as periodically writing for the website turned into a more regular outlet for Devin.
“After doing that for a while, the website had approached me and said, ‘would you like to be a contributor on an ongoing basis?’ and I said, ‘sure, why not?'”
But more than that, he wants the community of people living with the disease to find others they can relate to.
“For the most part, I’m hoping that people that do suffer like I suffer can read it and realize they’re not alone.”
In the end, he says he just wants his readers to get a sense of understanding.
“I think if there’s one thing I could get other people to understand is that you can’t judge a book by its cover, I think that if you see me hopefully I don’t look super disabled or even sick, but I want people to understand that looks are only part of it, you people can be suffering inside but not really show it on the outside and we work hard to not show it on the outside”
