Worcester County Department of Health announces anti-diabetes program

WORCESTER COUNTY, Md. – The Worcester County Health Department is announcing a new program to help combat diabetes, and teach people healthy habits to improve their quality of life.

The program will run from November 29th, 2021 through November 28 of next year at the Ocean Pines Library. There will be weekly classes and a ramp-up in testing for those who may be pre-diabetic. The programs will focus on increasing exercise, healthy eating- and ways to spot symptoms and recognize them as diabetes-related.

The Health Department tells us in previous years the program was a success and they’re hoping for the same this year.

“We work with program participants to teach them to eat better or increase their physical activity but more importantly it works they lose about 5 to 7 percent of their body weight based on their current weight,” said Worcester County Health Department Chronic Disease Supervisor Cyrstal Bell.

Bell tells us, support groups will also be available for those who already have diabetes, as having that support system can help people get on the right path to a healthier and longer life.
