SU President to step down
SALISBURY, Md. – Salisbury University President Charles Wight is stepping down from his role due to health concerns.
“This was a difficult decision and a personal one. I haven’t made a secret of the fact that I have some serious health issues, and I need to spend more time taking care of myself than this job allows. I also need to spend more time with my family and my four grandchildren,” President Wight said in a video announcement to the SU campus.
Wight took on the role in 2018 and told 47 ABC his proudest achievements since then have been the creation of the Center for Equity, Justice, and Inclusion under his leadership, as well his work in helping to boost financial aid services for students, and helping to increase Salisbury University’s endowment to over 100 million dollars for the first time.
He told 47 ABC that he will miss being able to talk with students and help to better understand the campus community, but he remains confident the university will remain in good hands.
“I have the best job in the world and I’m sorry to have to leave it but I know that I am just one person and the university has been around for a hundred years it will be around for a hundred more years and the school will go to the next level with me or without me,” he said.
Wight will leave his position as President until June 30, 2022, and will remain in his role as a chemistry professor, teaching one class per semester.
