Mardela man killed in single vehicle crash

SHARPTOWN, Md. – A single vehicle crash in Sharptown Sunday evening claimed the life of a Mardela man.

At around 8:50 p.m., Maryland State Police responded to the area of 10763 Sharptown Road for a report of a single vehicle crash involving an ejection. On arrival, troopers found a 1998 Chevrolet S-10 on its roof in the yard. Paramedics and fire crews arrived on scene before troopers and found the sole occupant, identified as 39-year-old Ronald Nichols III, laying outside the vehicle on the opposite side of the driveway as the vehicle.

Nichols was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle was traveling southbound on Sharptown Road at Scott Bennett Road. For unknown reasons, the vehicle failed to navigate the curve in the roadway and traveled off the roadway to the right. The vehicle then hit a guardrail end and traveled down an embankment, eventually entering a drained dit and hitting a drainage culvert. Police say the vehicle rolled several times, eventually ejecting Nichols from the passenger compartment. The vehicle continued across the driveway before coming to a rest on its roof.

Police say the cab was removed off of the frame of the vehicle as a result of the crash.

A Maryland State Police Accidental Collision Investigator was called to the scene. The case remains open and the investigation continues.
