Ironman Race in Cambridge sees another successful year

CAMBRIDGE, Md. – The Ironman race kicked off this morning in Cambridge complete with swimming, biking, and running.

The triathlon makes a big loop around the city of Cambridge with the finish line near the historic Long Wharf.

Family members of the ironman competitors cheered them on from the sidelines, moving from location to location to keep up with the race and cheer the athletes on.

One woman who was there to support her husband told 47ABC it was actually his 50th birthday challenge to complete the race.

“We’re just really excited for him we saw him on the bike we cant wait to see him on the run and we hope he’s doing great feeling good and its a long day with a lot of effort and energy and we are just so excited and proud for him,” she said.

The first competitors started to finish the race around 7:30 pm.

Local restaurants including Carmela’s Cucina told 47ABC that they are bracing for a post-race dinner rush with lots of hungry athletes coming in looking to celebrate their triathlon performance.

The Ironman Maryland race had to be canceled last year because of COVID-19.

The Ironman World Championship will take place in Hawaii in February of 2022
