Cape’s second half rally comes up short against Sals

LEWES, Del. – Cape Henlopen held Salesianum scoreless in the second half, but could not overcome a 21-point halftime deficit. The Vikings fall, 28-20, in their opening game in the new Class 3A Thursday evening.

The Sals offensive line controlled the trenches early on, leading to two short rushing touchdowns by running back Cooper Brown and quarterback Conor Campbell.

Thomas Messick scored the first touchdown of the season, taking a pitch off of left tackle and ran down the sidelines 17 yards.

The Sals seemed to put the game away in the second quarter. Campbell accounted for two touchdowns, one on the ground and another through the air to Deuce Rzucidlo.

Touchdown runs by Jordan Baines and Hank D’Ambrogi cut the Salesianum lead to just eight with 7:48 to go. The comeback attempt fell short when Jaiden Mason intercepted a pass by Cape with 3:51 to play.

Cape Henlopen (0-1) travels to Greenwood to play Woodbridge in week 2 next Friday.
