DELAWARE – The Brandywine Valley SPCA (BVSPCA) is helping to move more than 100 homeless cats and dogs from Louisiana. Many of the animals were being held at the Tangipahoa Parish Animal Shelter, and in the path of Hurricane Ida. As Louisiana rides out the storm, the animals are now being safely transported and held by BVSPCA.

The rescued animals took flight on a Wings of Rescue flight sponsored by Petco Love and the ASPCA. “We’re in a unique position to have a substantial rescue impact before and after Hurricane Ida because we have staff working in Louisiana right now,” said BVSPCA CEO Adam Lamb. “We’re combining that with our close working relationships with national groups like Wings of Rescue, Petco Love, and the ASPCA to help as many animals as we can before the storm and likely after.”

People who worked to make the flight possible say it’s important to have planes and pilots ready to go in moments like this. CEO of Wings of Rescue Ric Browde says not only does it keep the animals at risk safe. It also ease the burden on the shelters impacted by the storm. “We’ve seen much too often the devastating burden hurricanes and other natural disasters can place on local shelter facilities and know that early response is key to a successful outcome, not only for the dogs and cats, but the rescue personnel on scene, as well,” said Browde.

The Tangipahoa shelter is located about 45 minutes north of New Orleans, and works closely with the BVSPCA. Staff from the BVSPA work at the Tangipahoa shelter to help increase lifesaving. The two organizations are working with a grant from the Best Friends Animal Society. “We’re doing this work on top of our day-to-day work for lost pets and cruelty victims,” said Lamb.

Starting Saturday August 28th, the BVSPCA will be waiving adoption fees for all animals at all of its locations.
