Georgetown man facing a dozen charges after five vehicle crash

Police Presence During Black Friday

FELTON, Del. – Felton Police are investigating a crash involving five vehicles that happened Friday afternoon. Police say they were called to the intersection of US Route 13 and US Route 12 (Midstate Road) around 4:39 p.m. Witnesses told police four vehicles were stopped at a red light, when a fifth vehicle failed to stop. The fifth vehicle crashed into the back of a Ford pick-up truck. Police say that caused a chain reaction with the vehicles in front of them.

Police say the driver responsible for the crash tried to leave the scene, but an off duty Camden Police officer took him into custody after a brief struggle. The driver was identified as 29-year-old Daniel Antonio Velazquez of Georgetown. Police say they could smell a strong odor of alcohol on Velazquez. Velazquez was given sobriety tests, but police say he failed them.

Velazquez was taken to a nearby hospital for injuries he sustained in the crash. Hours later, he was taken to Camden Police Department and charged with a dozen charges. Those charges include 2nd degree vehicular assault, resisting arrest, criminal mischief over and under $1,000, and leaving the scene of a crash resulting in injury. Velazquez is also facing charges for driving under the influence, driving without a valid license, failure to have insurance identification, failure to give information at the scene of a crash, failure to have a registration card, inattentive driving, and failure to report a crash involving alcohol or drugs.

Velazquez was arraigned by JP Court #7 and taken to Sussex Correctional Institute on $2,606 secure bail.
