Rentable Scooters now available in Salisbury

Scooters arranged in a line downtown

SALISBURY, Md–

For those who want a new way to get around, a new option just rolled into town.

100 electric scooters will now be available in Salisbury to rent for short trips across town.

Those who want to take the new wheels for spin can download the Bird App to find where the nearest bike is, and just how far they are allowed to ride it.

The new transportation service was unveiled in a ceremony in Downtown Salisbury with a speech from Mayor Jake Day.

Day believes that the cheaper rides relative to a ride share app or car could help bridge the gap for low income commuters.

“Mobility options are needed, transportation costs are rising for people, fuel costs are rising, all of these things must be addressed somehow and options like scooters and bikes are one of the ways to solve that,” he said.

The scooters would also serve as a boon for tourists in Salisbury, according to Day.

“I see people everyday walking around with a map of downtown so they are clearly tourists,” he said, adding “We have a lot of neighborhoods that are close by but a bit too far to walk for work so this is gonna serve almost the whole city.”

Two places the bikes won’t be able to go is the historic part of the SU campus and the North End of Salisbury.

That may change soon according to Day.

“We are building a major bike trail as part of our rail trail to the north end thanks to help from the state of Maryland,” he said.

The scooter program will start with the 100 scooters but Bird plans to expand the number of scooter and coverage area based on demand.
