Kent Island falls just short of 2A State Title, lose in final minute to Hereford
BALTIMORE, MD.- Despite a 3 goal comeback to tie the game up with under three minutes to play, the Kent Island Buc’s fell to Hereford 5-4 in the 2A State Title game. KI finished the regular season a perfect 6-0, finished as the No. 1 seed in their region and finished with an appearance in the 2A State Championship game.
The Buc’s were in a deep hole from the start of the game, down 3-0 just minutes into the second half. After giving up the third goal, KI seemed to wake up. The Buccaneers roared back on a 4-1 run to tie us up with just over four minutes to play in regulation. The comeback led by goals from Jack Mulligan (2), Jamie Smith and Michael Ruffennach.
After the Ruffennach goal, the Bulls won the ensuing face-off and ran the time all the way down to a minute and set in for the game winner. Owen Cogan drove through the defense and bounced the shot past the KI keeper for to break the tie! Ensuing face-off, the teams battled for the ball for about 15 seconds and the Bulls came up with it again to all but ice the game. With ten seconds left, Hereford turned the ball over handing the Bucs one last chance to force overtime but Kent Island was unable to get a shot off as they fell to Hereford 5-4 in the 2A State Title game.
