Hyperbaric oxygen therapy center in Lewes helps patients with pain
Lewes, Delaware-
Delaware Hyperbaric is announcing their second hyperbaric chamber , which allows patients to breathe concentrated oxygen and increase 02 levels in their blood, something patients say, has been life-changing.
“I’ve had lupus for a long period of time and recently I came down with some symptoms, stomach pain joint pain, and really bad fatigue headaches, low grade fever so i wanted to come in and try it out and when i get out of the chamber, i feel my symptoms were lifted,” said patient Tessa Lingo.
Lingo says the relief she experiences lasts about 24 hours after the treatment, which involves wearing an oxygen mask inside of a sealed chamber furnished with pillows and a mattress.
For many patients, Delaware Hyperbaric may be the only place to go for treatment, as the only alternative on the Eastern Shore would be BeBe health hospital, which is only authaurized to use the treatment for 14 illnesses.
Clinical Advisor for Delaware Hyperbaric, Alex Williams told 47ABC that in Europe, over 60 conditions are treated with oxygen therapy, and hopes that those who may be turned away from treatment at a hospital can still get a therapy that could improve quality of life.
“Hospitals have a very narrow in which they can treat their conditions what’s really exciting about hyperbaric is we are not bound by those rules,” she said.
Delaware Hyperbaric Owners Liz Guida and Steve Caldwell say they understand that for those new to the treatment, staying in the chamber for 60 to 90 minutes can seem daunting, but patients say its not as scary as it seems.
“It’s actually kind of comfortable, they have a lot of comfy pillows I can bring my phone in there I can read and I catch up on my emails,” Lingo said.
Williams believes the treatment should not be limited to the hospital setting.
“Oxygen is our cellular currency, we use it for all that we do for recover for performance,” she said, adding “We don’t like to step outside of our comfort zone but when we do amazing things can happen.”
