Decatur takes home the 3A South Region II title in nail biter with Easton

BERLIN, MD.- In a 2-1 nail biter, the Stephen Decatur Seahawks held on to defeat Easton and capture the 3A South Region II title. The Seahawks first in over 11 years.

The Seahawks fell in this same game two years ago to Bennett 7-5 in an instant classic. On the mound for Decatur in the final two innings of that game was sophomore Evan Truitt. Decatur gave up three runs in the 7th to fall to Bennett 8-6.

Today, Truitt started on the mound and started out hot! Striking out the first six Easton batters to keep the Warriors off the board. On the other side, Warriors ace Max Venner kept the Hawks off the board with two strikeouts in the first inning. In the second inning, Decatur got the bats going. Cayden Shockley knocked a single into center to bring Logan Tapman home from third to take the 1-0 lead to end the second inning.

In the top of the third inning, Decatur began to make some mistakes and Easton took advantage. After two walks and a wild pitch, Easton had a runner on second and third. In a crucial mistake by Truitt, the senior balked scoring the runner from third to tie us up at one.

After another strong defensive inning for Decatur, the offense took advantage. Lucas Loring send a sac fly out to center to bring Stephen Wade home from third, giving the Seahawks their second lead of the game. In the next two innings, Easton just couldn’t get the bats going even though their defense did their job to keep it a one score game headed to the top of the 7th. Things went the Warriors way to start the inning. Easton was able to load the bases with their first hit of the game (Colin Baynard single) and two walks with two outs on the board. On the sixth batter of the inning, a dribbler was sent up the middle of the defense right to the short stop for a fielders choice ending any threat from the Easton offense. Decatur held on to advance to the quarterfinals, they await the reseeding by the MPSSAA to see who they draw on Monday.
