DSP investigating fatal crash in Laurel

LAUREL, Del. – Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash that happened Saturday night in Laurel. Police say around 7:07 p.m. a 29-year-old man was driving a 2004 Toyota Corolla on Kaye Road, approaching the intersection with County Seat Highway. Police say the driver was speeding.

Meanwhile, police say a 27-year-old Laurel man was also driving along County Seat Highway, and also approaching the intersection. He was driving a 2012 Ford F-250 pickup truck. Police say Kaye Road is controlled by a stop sign at that intersection, while traffic on County Seat Highway is not required to stop. As the Ford was passing through, police say the Toyota did not stop. That’s when police say the Toyota hit the right side of the Ford, causing it to spin. As the truck spun, police say it flipped and went off the side of County Seat Highway. Police say the truck landed on its tires. The Toyota went off the side of the highway and hit a utility pole wire and came to a stop.

The driver of the Toyota was not wearing his seatbelt, according to police. Police say he was pronounced dead at the scene, and his identification is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The driver of the Ford was wearing his seatbelt and was taken to Beebe Medical Center. Police say he was treated for minor injuries and later released.

The intersection of Kaye Road and County Seat Highway was closed off for about four hours while investigators reconstructed the crash. It was eventually cleared. The crash is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Corporal R. Albert at (302) 703-3266.
