Renters still facing evictions despite moratorium

MARYLAND.- Also in Maryland, many renters are still facing the possibility of losing their homes, even with a current moratorium in place.

The moratorium from Governor Hogan provides legal defense against eviction, but only to tenants unable to pay rent due to financial hardships.
We’re told  even with this in place evictions are still happening.

Housing advocates say big factors include tenants still being unemployed and landlords taking advantage of the current seller’s market climate. “Lots of landlords, private landlords that may only have one or two homes that have just decided that due to the pandemic they don’t want to landlords anymore. So they’re selling their properties,” said Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Wicomico County Molly Holligoss.

Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County is urging those impacted by COVID to seek help. Applications are being accepted, with rental assistance available through Wicomico Habitat.
