Rep. Rochester addresses IRS backlog
DELAWARE – U.S. Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester along with other house of representatives are calling for an investigation into the severe backlog of paper tax returns.
The IRS currently has a backlog of 5.5 million paper returns received in 2020 and that’s in addition to 8.7 million paper returns received by the IRS so far this year. According to U.S. officials, IRS services have become inaccessible when taxpayers need even more support filing their taxes due to the pandemic.
As a result, 54 taxpayer assistance centers have closed, making it more difficult to gain help with taxes than in previous years. U.S. Representative Rochester writes in a letter and essentially asks for an investigation to address the issue as soon as possible because, American taxpayers are suffering.
