Smyrna loses lead, falls in DIAA state championship to Sanford

Eagles finish season with 19-1 overall record

SALISBURY, Md- The Smyrna Eagles lost a late lead, and ultimately fell 51-45 in the 2021 DIAA state championship game to Sanford.

The Eagles jumped out to an 11-3 lead to begin the game, featuring a barrage of three pointers and tough interior defense. Smyrna would lead 17-10 after the first quarter, and hold a 28-20 advantage at halftime.

In the second half, the Warriors began to break out. They put together an 8-0 run to tie the game at 28 with 5:35 left in the third quarter. Sanford would take their first lead since the first quarter a few minutes later, but Smyrna would recover and take a one point lead into the fourth (33-32).

In the fourth, Sanford big man Nnanna Njoku would begin to dominate the paint. The Villanova commit scored 15 of his game-high 24 points in the second half, and gave the Warriors their biggest lead of the game (49-45) with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation.

Elijah Credle finished with a team-high 20 points for Smyrna, who finished the 2021 season with a 19-1 overall record.
