Smyrna advances to DIAA state title game

Eagles survive late Salesianum comeback bid

SALISBURY, Md- Senior Olumuyiwa Salako hit a free-throw with 0.6 seconds left to push the Eagles to a 43-42 win over Salesianum in the DIAA state semifinal game on Thursday evening.

Smyrna, who led by 10 at the half (25-15), saw their lead overtaken with 3+ minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. After Salesianum junior Justin Molen hit two free throws to tie the game at 42,  Smyrna would push the ball down the court with nine seconds remaining, and see Salako draw a foul off an offensive rebound.

The senior would hit one of two free throws to push Smyrna into the championship game. With the win, Smyrna secures their third state championship appearance over the last five years. The Eagles will take on Sanford in the DIAA championship game at Dover High School on Saturday at 4:30pm.
