New scholarship opportunity for high school students in Wicomico County
WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. – A new scholarship opportunity is now available to students. The Salisbury Lynching Memorial Task Force is teaming up with The Equal Justice Initiative for an essay writing contest. 9th through 12th grade students who participate will be asked to write essays that examine the history of a topic of racial injustice.
Amber Green with with the Salisbury Lynching Memorial Task Force says topics can cover a wide range, from education to the justice system. “When we look at the percentage of young people who are going from the school to prison pipeline, looking at the history of the DOJ or doing an investigation on our public schools. I think there’s a lot to focus on,” said Green.
Green says this is a great opportunity not just for students, but also for the community as a whole. “The great part about this is that you’re putting the young person in the seat of a teacher. You’re labeling them as the person who is the expert. They’re using their own personal experience and their own opinion to help further the conversation of racial injustice,” said Green.
The prizes for the winning essays total up to $5,000. Green tells 47ABC there will be tiers for winners. The deadline to enter your submission is May 28th.
