Del. commits to using 40% renewable energy by 2035

DELAWARE – Delaware is one step closer on its path to relying more heavily on renewable energy. Wednesday Governor John Carney signed Senate Bill 33. The bill commits the first state to having 40% of its energy come from renewable sources by 2035. “It will set the standard for the energy sector and renewable energy up until 2035,” said Gov. Carney.

State Senator Stephanie Hansen, the bill’s primary sponsor, says prioritizing renewable energy in the mix of sources providers use will be a game changer in the fight against climate change. “We don’t generally think about that when we flip on the light switch in the kitchen in the morning, and all we’re really thinking about is whether the light comes on or not. But being a responsible environmental steward and stepping up to address climate change means thinking about that mix and setting higher standards,” said Sen. Hansen.

Gov. Carney says signing legislation like this – is especially important for a state like Delaware, where coastal flooding is a very real threat. He also says shifting towards renewable energy could promote job growth and economic opportunity for the first state.
